Riesling: Learn More About It

Riesling grapes

Riesling: Often known in the US as a “sweet” wine, Riesling is actually quite a versatile grape. It can range from bone-dry to lusciously sweet, depending on where it’s grown and the winemaker’s taste. Known for vibrant acidity, Riesling often has flavors of green apple, citrus, and stone fruit, with floral and mineral notes.

Why did it get to be known as sweet? Germany is a key Riesling grower. Many of their early wines exported to the US had a sweeter style. Washington Rieslings, however, tend to be much drier. Washington winemakers LOVE this grape and there are some you must try. Riesling was the second most planted grape in Washington state in 2023 (24, 357 tons vs. 48,369 tons for Cabernet Sauvignon), reflecting that love.

Sommeliers, too, often love Riesling because it is an under-appreciated varietal. It’s a fun way to engage with them, by asking about the Rieslings they have. Because it’s not as well known as, say, a Sauvignon Blanc, it also can be better priced on a restaurant wine list.
